Five years after his death... Memories of Garnet Silk
linger
At 28 years-old Garnet Silkīs career was on the path to greatness.
Then tragedy struck at December 9, 1994, three days after
his final performance alongside singer Richie Stephens at
the mirage night club in Kingston, when the Rastafarian singer
was killed in an explosion at his motherīs home-it is an incident
that remains a mystery to this day. Bridgette Anderson his
former manager remembers: "Whenever he sang, he always touched
people souls, there are singers and there is Garnet. Love
was his message, he wasnīt into burning anybody". Interestingly
a new Silk song, Sheīs Like A Mom To Me will be released
soon by Bobby Digital. Since his death, There have been several
releases of compilation albums, particulary by VP Records
wich has distributed most of the singers work (Itīs Growing,100%
Silk, Love Is The Answer, Nothing Can Divide Us, Silky Mood
and Journey).
Silk, came originally from Manchester, the home parish of other
roots renaissance artistes like Tony Rebel and Luciano. With
dub poet Yasus Afari, singers Utan Greene and Everton Blender,
Silk formed the core of a cultural rebirth that reached itīs
height in the mid 1990īs. "He came, he sang, he went", Anderson
says, "Wherever he is now, I know I will see him again...
